Knitting has long been an old craft form that anyone could indulge in. It is a skill that many a grandmother possesses and a skill which saw a sharp decline in popularity during 1980s, as the need for it disappeared with the growth of machines and cheap clothing. Originally people knitted for the simple idea to produce clothing to protect themselves from cold temperatures. However with various machines being invented for this reason, knitting became an unnecessary skill and was rarely taught in schools, as it was in the 50s and 60s.
For these reasons the art of knitting suffered a decline in popularity towards the end of the 20th century; however it is now surprising that it has experienced somewhat of a revival in the modern 21st century. Despite it being no longer seen as a necessary skill, it is now a hobby that many have chosen to learn. There are various reasons for this revival and it cannot be attributed to one single factor.
One reason is the creative freedom that comes with knitting. People are able to use various materials and have a choice from a selection of different colours. With clothing now produced on a mass scale, it is not uncommon to purchase similar clothing to friends and family. With knitting, it gives people the opportunity to produce unique clothing that no one else will have, appealing to people wishing to stand out from the norm.
The revival of the craft has also been aided by various celebrities who have chosen to take it up. These include a-list celebrities such as Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts. There are numerous magazines with actors and musicians on the front covers and with our celebrity-obsessed culture, seeing these famous people knitting will have surely inspired many others to take up craft as a hobby.
Another factor would be the increased availability of natural fibres such as angora, merino and alpaca. These fibres have become easier and less costly to collect and process from animals and has therefore made the hobby more accessible to people.
However, without doubt one of the most important reasons for knitting being able to make such a comeback is the internet and its obvious advantages. The internet allows anybody and everyone to communicate on a worldwide scale, which has given knitters the opportunity to speak to one another and share interests and ideas. This has led to the creation of various knitting websites, podcasts and online knitting magazines. Through these methods, knitting enthusiasts have been able to reach a much wider audience and ensure that this old craft form is far from being consigned to the past.
