Printed Silk Fabrics Sewing Tips: How to Sew With Silk!

Throughout history, most cultures considered silk a luxury fabric. Even as synthetic processes have made silk more accessible, silk is still synonymous with wealth and lavishness. As beautiful and luxurious as it is to wear and feel, silk can be demanding to sew with. However, with a few tips and tricks and a lot of patience and practice, you can make beautiful crafts and clothing using silk.

1. Pre-treat the fabric. Though some silks (such as taffeta and crepe) should only be dry cleaned, most are hand-washable. Soak the uncut fabric in cool water mixed with a very small amount of baby shampoo or other mild soap. Rinse the fabric several times in cold water and lay flat. Allow the fabric to dry completely before you work with it.

2. Reinforce the fabric before you cut it. Since many silks can be quite slippery, lay the fabric over tissue paper and cut through both the silk and the tissue paper.3. Obtain silk pins to mark and fasten. Silk threads break easily and specialized silk pins are sharper than regular pins. This allows them to slip easily between the threads of the fabric without breaking them.4. Use a small, sharp needle and cotton thread. It's best to use a brand new needle each time, if possible, to ensure the sharpest point possible so your needles doesn't break any threads.

Cotton thread also lessens the possibility that you'll tear the fabric. Cotton threads are weaker than silk threads, which allows the finished garment to have seams that are weaker than the fabric. This means that should there be any stress on the garment, the seam breaks before the fabric rips.5. Avoid fusible interfacing. Many silks are too delicate for fusible interfacing. You can use silk organza for areas that need stiff support and you can use self-fabric for areas needing reinforcement while remaining flexible. If you must use fusible interfacing, super-fine fusibles are best.
