Cross stitching is quite popular nowadays because it is fun, easy and colorful. Many people young or old are enjoying cross stitching, while some made it as one of their hobbies. I am pretty sure that once you know how to cross stitch you will also get hooked on this fund and simple hobby. Anyway, before you study how to cross stitch let's discuss the wonders or the basics of cross stitching first, so that you will have the idea how is it done and what are the things that you will need.
What is cross stitch or cross stitching?
Cross stitch is a popular kind of embroidery and it is also one of the oldest forms of embroidery. It is also one of the most popular hobbies around the world, especially in Asia and Europe.
What makes cross stitching fun is you can create images by stitching "X" shapes or stitches on aida cloth. Aida cloth consists of small hole, where you will put your floss or DMC's (cross stitching threads) on. You will be given a printed pattern to follow, and the pattern includes legends and icons which tells you the distance and the color of thread that you will use.
Here are the things that you need for cross stitching:
Aida clothDMC or floss (If you are using patterns make sure that you have all the colors that you need.)Sharp scissorsEmbroidery hoop (Optional. You can actually cross stitch without this, but many people believe that embroidery hoops makes cross stitching easier and faster for them.)Here are some of the basics steps on how to cross stitch:
We will focus on how to make horizontal lines first. I think this is enough to give you an idea how to cross stitch.
Get one strand of your thread and put it on your needle. If you are using a hoop, hold it with your left hand and hold the needle using your right hand (if you are right handed).Aida cloth is made up of tiny squares and hole. To give you the idea, imagine or just focus on 3 or 4 horizontal squares first. Each square will have 4 holes. Insert your needle from behind the cloth on the lower left corner hole, pull the needle and thread, then insert your needle in front of the cloth to the upper right corner of the same square or block, now you have a slanted line.
Next, your needle should be behind the cloth again. Insert your needle from behind the cloth to the lower right corner of the same box, pull the needle and thread, and insert your needle in front of the cloth to the upper left of the same box. That's just the introduction. If you will cross stitch a horizontal line, for example 5 squares, simply do the slanted stitches first and when you reached the fifth box proceed on completing the "X" shape or stitch back to the first square.
It may sound confusing and hard, but once you know how it is done, everything will be easy for you. I think it will be easy if you will search for some videos or pictures on how it is done.
