Crazy Quilt Needlework

Have you been to the threads department lately? There are many new choices. Crazy quilt needlework with the new thread colors and texture variety will embellish or add the finishing touches to any quilt. Silk and embroidery threads are still the most popular or first choice threads.

Before shopping have an idea as to how you may want to embellish the crazy quilt. Your questions will concern what types of stitching can be used. My answer is to start with what you know.

Are you familiar and experienced with these stitching methods to use for your crazy quilt needlework?

Use any of these stitching methods listed and any other methods which are familiar to you. Each category has much to offer in stitching styles and uses. Work with one or several stitching techniques.

The needlework involved in decorative stitching is similar to the final paint strokes which an artist uses to refine their work of art. The artist works with paint. The quilter works with threads.

Cross stitching is great for making a label for stitching names, dates, special occasions or events and the signature of the quilting artist who made the crazy quilt. Or perhaps there is a poem, quotation, or special message to emboss.

If poems or special messages are long and wordy or you have a special signature, you may choose to write in calligraphy style. Use a fine point pen and permanent washable ink.

Crazy quilt fabrics contain people, animals, abstract, and flowers and we want to emphasize these objects by doing outline embroidery. For one of my crazy quilt needlework projects I thought it appropriate to use a small stemming stitch.

I work with fancy or bridal fabrics and use metallic threads to add luxury and glamour. On cotton, rayon thread seems to add a bit of soft glamorous accents.

The satin embroidery stitch is used often in crazy quilts as it adds a raised dimension to leaves, flower petals, bird wings, and any number of objects. The type of thread used will add reality to the item or enhance elegance and luxury.

Imagine using these other methods to embellish your quilts:

Make the most of your imagination to work with yarn, cord, leather, plastic, and narrow ribbons as other stitching garnishes. Outlining with any of these materials will add other dimensions of interest.

Experiment and play with the different sizes of ribbons creating small flowers, stars, and abstract designs. Weave ribbon in and out through lace holes to create beauty and attention.
